That is the question addressed in this study conducted at Geisenger that used claims data to compare medication adherence for patients with hypertension or hyperlipidemia who had or didn’t have access to their PCP’s notes. I was surprised by the results of this study. Basically—access to notes made no difference on medication adherence in this study. Doesn’t mean the OpenNotes concept shouldn’t be employed, but at the very least suggests that impact likely depends on the execution. This data was collected from 2009 - 2011. Would be interesting to know if this study has been repeated as Geisnger has evolved its approach to OpenNotes.
What is your organization’s plan to implement OpenNotes in a way that helps patients?
