About

I Have Seen Onsite Clinics From the Inside

ABOUT BENEFITSDOC

I am Dr. David Claud, a physician and the founder of BenefitsDoc. I help employers, unions, and their benefits advisers find out whether their onsite clinic is doing its best. Then I work with clinic leaders to make it better.

My focus is practical: clearer goals, useful reports, and better teamwork around patient care.

Why I Do This

For six years, I served as the first Chief Medical Officer of Activate Healthcare, which later merged with Paladina Health. While I was there, it grew from about 15 clinics to about 65, in 16 states. My job was to engage our physicians, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants in continually improving the quality of care and the value they delivered to our clients. In 2019, Activate was named Best in KLAS for worksite health services.

Along the way, I helped create:

  • A shared model for how clinicians and care teams work with patients and manage whole groups of patients

  • A peer chart review program, so clinicians learn from each other

  • Chart reviews at 30, 60, and 90 days for every new clinician

  • Quality meetings and incident reporting that involve clinicians directly

  • A Patient Safety Organization, a protected way to report safety events and learn from them

Other Experience

  • Medical Director at Baylor Scott & White Quality Alliance. I was the clinical partner for direct-to-employer and value-based care work. I applied clinical and population-health expertise to help improve outcomes and reduce avoidable use of care for employer groups.

  • National Medical Director, National Accounts, at OptumHealth (UnitedHealth Group). I gave clinical guidance on case management, disease management, and treatment decision support for self-insured employers.

  • Chief of Care in the Community at the Central Texas VA Healthcare System. I worked to improve how veterans’ care with outside providers is coordinated and measured.

  • Interim Chief Medical Officer of a rural, 65-bed MaineHealth hospital. I helped clinicians adopt e-consults (quick specialist advice without an office visit) for hepatitis C treatment, and a telestroke program.
