Do EHR capabilities impact the quality of care in ambulatory clinics?

This study suggests that advanced EHR capabilities are associated with “better performance on a composite measure of ambulatory clinical quality.” EHR capabilities examined included problem lists, clinical decision support, e-prescribing, results management, and patient communication capacity.

This study does not evaluate the actual utilization of these capabilities, just their presence/absence.

My sense is that this underscores the benefits of PCPs having access to an EHR with advanced capability, and actually using these capabilities in ways that make clinical care easier for patients.
